A taste of things to come.
The first time we ever served a gourmet meal on board a Singapore Airlines flight was in October 1979. We had master chefs from Hugo’s Restaurant at the Grand Hyatt prepare and serve an exclusive menu for our First Class passengers. We should have known this would be the future: once we’d sampled the Prime Rib, there was no turning back.

Through the lens | The Straits Times:
All it took was 30 seconds.
That was the amount of time needed for the Army’s elite commandos to storm Singapore Airlines plane SQ 117 and kill four Pakistani hijackers who took control of it on March 26, 1991.
The rescue, codenamed Operation ‘Thunderbolt’, saved the lives of all 123 remaining hostages on-board at that time.
SQ 117 was headed to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur when the four hijackers, who claimed to be supporters of the former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, took control of the plane with knives and explosives. They made several demands, including diverting the plane to Sydney and the release of 11 Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) members jailed in Pakistan.
The plane eventually landed in Singapore as there was not enough fuel to make the journey to Australia.
The turning point in the negotiations happened about eight hours from landing when the hijackers got frustrated as their demands were not met. They threatened to kill a hostage every 10 minutes.

The new Singapore Airlines TVC just premiered last night. After a long hiatus, I’m glad that the Singapore Girl and the old jingle is back on the front of the airline’s new advertising campaign.
Such a gentle way about you. All around the world. Singapore Girl, you’re a great way to fly.
